Ratoath Junior National School, Ratoath, Co. Meath

Our History

Ratoath Mixed N.S. has been at its present site on the Fairyhouse Road since 1911, though it has been extended and refurbished several times including numerous extensions as it grew in numbers. It also changed from being a boys and girls separate school to a mixed school in that time. At one point there was even a teacher’s home on the grounds too!

The 1997 extension allowed for an exciting opportunity – a time capsule was buried in the wall on the Junior Infant corridor, and we look forward to opening this soon – perhaps even next year on its 30th anniversary!

On September 1st, 2005, due to the huge increase in numbers, Ratoath Mixed N.S. divided into Ratoath Junior National School and Ratoath Senior National School. The Junior School remained in the original building, with many prefabs affectionately known as ‘The Train’ and Ratoath Senior National School opened in a two-storey building on the same campus.

In 2011 we celebrated our centenary with some famous past pupils, the garda band and lots of performances and reminiscing about the ‘good old days’! Please see more about this even here https://www.ratoathsns.ie/about-us/centenary/ .

A new 10-classroom extension to Ratoath Junior National school was completed in 2010, which saw a new 2-story wing open and our beautiful courtyard playground came into operation.

September 2023 saw the exciting opening of our first Autism class, with the second class opening in 2024. We have a state-of-the-art playground, sensory room, Zen Den and two modern and well-equipped classrooms.

Our school has seen many staff come and go, while others have worked in the school for their entire careers. We were delighted to welcome Ms. Meabh Madden in September 2026 as our principal. She builds on the legacy of those before her – Ms. Miriam Fox, Ms. Pat Foley and Mr. Maurice Kearney among others.

The children of Ratoath Junior National school are our greatest asset. While it is with happy tears we send them to Ratoath Senior National school after 2nd class, we celebrate them each year with a special graduation ceremony. We enjoy when the children greet us and visit us, especially as the 6th class from RSNS return to help with Sports Day each year. We often welcome past pupils during TY work experience, teacher training, and some have returned as staff members. We are also always delighted to see the enrolment of second or even third-generation pupils and appreciate their families’ commitment to our school and our community here in Ratoath. At the heart of the community, our primary school brings generations together through a shared intergenerational space, celebrating local heritage, stories and the rich history that connects young and old alike.
